dubble bubble paid tribute to the idea of voices: speaking, discussing, and cheering as they inhabit the public space of the Hsinchu County Stadium. The shapes were derived from the speech bubbles found in cartoons and comics, and referenced spaces like speakers’ corners. The project had a political dimension, founded on the idea that a fertile culture needs to encourage the open expression of ideas, and speech is one of the main conduits to do so. The project was an invitation to people to celebrate the power of communication, prompting them to gather underneath, thinking about what they say, discuss things, and to take pictures of themselves saying something.

Outfitted with changing illumination sequences, the lighting would depict a range of conversations:
• a calm discussion where one is lit, then the other
• a more animated discussion where both are flashing at the same time
• sometimes both speaking in different colours
• sometimes speaking together in the same colour

At night, these lights would illuminate the perimeters of the bubbles and when it rains, the water will catch the light as it passes through the open spaces. The bubbles were scaled to be visible from across the street and from long distances, to give a special focus to the entrance plaza of the stadium.
