This public art project takes its cue from the grand rooms of neo-classical architecture. “GRANtable” completes the axis of an existing grand stairway by terminating the procession with a grand outdoor dining space. It also provides a Lilliputian scene for thousands of condominium dwellers watching from above. The 66 foot long table ranges from being an empty piece of heroic sculpture to a site for large community picnics. Somewhere between these vacillating scales lies the essence of the work.
Precedents for “GRANtable” include the large table at Villa Lante in Bagnaia, Italy and the béton brut concrete tables of Le Corbusier.
