Victory Square Memorial Lights

Victory Square was once the historic centre of Vancouver and has long been the site of the city’s war memorial cenotaph and a popular annual Remembrance Day ceremony. During World War I the square served as the muster station for men enlisting. Returning soldiers also used the site as a demonstration ground to depict trench warfare in an effort to raise money for widowed families.The park had suffered neglect in recent years. The Victory Square Memorial Lighting project was part of an overall park refurbishment plan spearheaded by a local community group called “The Friends of Victory Square”. We conceived of new light fixtures which could be both memorial and functional, co-opting the helmet form to reference those lost and brave. The soldier lights line the parade circle “at attention”, and are arranged “at ease” throughout the rest of the park.
