Our studio worked with the City of Victoria and several stakeholder communities to re-envision a major part of historic Ross Bay Cemetery. The kilometer-long design addressed three distinct edge conditions — a neighbourhood street, a prominent corner and a beachfront road. The design would improve security along this vulnerable southwest edge, beautify the area in a manner which was sympathetic to the existing cemetery, and provide new interment options for a range of economic and social needs. The project identified several thousand interment sites within waterfront columbaria terraces and memorial walls.
Although unbuilt, we constructed a prototypical wall which illustrated the intended materials and qualities of the proposed design.
